If you plan on renovating a bathroom in your home, and you plan on being there for many years to come, you can personalize the renovation as much as you would like to fit your unique sense of style. That could mean a wild wallpaper, unique hardware or even a coloured toilet. However, if the plan is to sell the home in the short term, we recommend focusing on features that will appeal to a broad range of buyers, increases the chances of you successfully selling your home.

While there are so many answers to this question, what we regularly see our clients asking for are:

3) What are some of the unforeseen challenges with bathroom renovations?

When working on a bathroom renovation, one can only identify some complications once the demolition has begun. For example, until the existing drywall is removed, it is difficult to easily identify complications such as water damage, mold, or outdated plumbing or electrical. We will always communicate these possibilities to our clients beforehand and will have a plan in place, but it is always something to keep in mind when working through the renovation process. 

4) How do I design my new bathroom? 

While designing an additional space in your home can be daunting, the first question you should ask yourself is, “What are my primary goals for this bathroom renovation?” Some examples might include adding in additional storage space and making the bathroom more functional or perhaps it is more important to create a spa-like retreat.

– Installing grab bars. While having grab bars installed right away may not be necessary, it is good to remember they are an important tool to keep you in your home for as long as possible. You can install grab bars at any point after a renovation, but if there is no blocking behind the drywall/tile you intend to screw the grab bar into, it may not be as secure as needed.

After the demolition phase, we will walk through the bathroom with you and identify key spots in the framing where we will add additional blocking. 

– Bench Seating. Having a bench installed in your new shower can not only give it a more luxurious feel, but also allow the space to function well into the future when it may be hard to stand for long periods. 

– Textured flooring. To prevent falls, use a textured floor if you plan on staying in your home as you age. This can be as simple as installing matts or strips in and around the shower and bath or choosing to use a flooring material with anti-slip properties, such as some porcelain or stone products. 

7) What factors do you consider when selecting materials, fixtures, and finishes for the bathroom renovation? 

There are several factors to consider when selecting materials, a few of which include durability, functionality, cost, and aesthetics. While these factors are important, our focus is to best align our material choices in a fashion that meets your needs and preferences. 

8) Does your team build vanities? Or would I have to buy something from a big box store? 

We are more than capable of building a custom piece for your bathroom, whether that is full length cabinets or vanities. A cheaper option is to buy something ready-made from a bathroom supplier, but if you can’t find what you need, we’re always willing to do custom work. 

9) What is something easily overlooked, but incredibly important, for bathroom renovations? 

Proper Ventilation – While thinking of ventilation in a bathroom renovation isn’t very sexy, it is vitally important. Inadequate ventilation can lead to moisture buildup, mold, and mildew growth, which can damage surfaces and compromise indoor air quality.
