When Quantum took on this project — our sister house, a mirror image of our own home — it was a labour of love. Without ever having lived in it, we knew this 1912 house intimately. The result straddles the integrity of its original cedar-shingled heritage exterior with modern luxuries: heated floors, HVAC, air conditioning, and solar power. The restored original front door opens to reveal a wooden newel post and upstairs railing lovingly restored and stained, with reclaimed wood posts from the basement now framing the living room entrance. Period-appropriate trim details are retained throughout, keeping each room feeling authentic alongside the many modern finishes in the kitchen, bathrooms, and living room. The house was jacked up to dig down and create a higher basement ceiling height. Once the new foundation was poured, the 114-year-old frame was gently lowered until it audibly sighed as it found its new footing. The basement now includes a south-facing one-bedroom 600 sq ft suite with built-in laundry. This project is one of eleven we’ve completed within half a block of our own front door — a testament to the trust our neighbours place in our work, and the relationships that keep us coming back.
