Gambier Island Retreat

Gambier Island holds a special place in our portfolio: a remote, off-grid compound perched on a point between two bays in Howe Sound, where the land itself became part of the build. Our work here spans the full property: the main house, designed by designer Allan Peters, was constructed using trees harvested directly from the site, milled into the substantial post-and-beam framework that define its West Coast character. Foundations were built with hand-mixed concrete and insulated Styrofoam forms, which is a method that delivers both thermal performance and a level of craftsmanship that poured-in-place construction demands in remote settings. From there, we designed and built a guesthouse and a deluxe outdoor kitchen area, each carrying the same material language as the main house: cedar, fir, and locally sourced timber throughout. The property runs entirely on solar power, fully off-grid, which is a fitting reflection of its surroundings and a testament to what thoughtful island construction can achieve.
